Dance for All (DFA) offers a 12-month training programme on which students learn skills that bridge the gap between being a dance student and becoming a professional dancer. Applications are open to technically good, strong and versatile male and female dance students, 18 to 23 years.
The aim of the Bridging Programme is to offer insight into what is expected of a professional dancer and to groom students accordingly.
Students accepted onto the programme receive individual guidance and assistance in developing their talents from DFA teachers, guest teachers and choreographers. Lectures and teachers for subjects that complement the course material are brought in from time to time to work with the Bridging Programme students.
As versatility is essential in the performing arts industry, students receive training in a variety of disciplines, including Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz, African, Flamenco and choreography. Bridging Programme students have the opportunity to become members of DFA’s non-professional InSPIRAtions Youth Company, after an audition process, which offers abundant opportunities to build up performance experience.
DFA successfully piloted its Bridging Programme in 2011 and some of these students amongst other previous trainees have secured places in well-known dance companies such as Cape Town City Ballet, Jazzart Dance Theatre, and Cape Academy of Performing Arts.
At least 20 to 25 former Bridging Programme students have received placements with respected dance institutions for further professional training and are gaining opportunities to perform professionally.
