Leap Programme

On the 13th April six American dance teachers from the LEAP programme, headed by Kristine Elliott and Mark Baird, who are all studying towards a Bachelor of Arts Degree started their two week Dance Intensive at four Dance Institutions in Cape Town. This is a great opportunity and most beneficial for young dance teachers to get some practical experience teaching in South Africa.

The LEAP teachers worked with various groups of students from Dance for All, The Cape Academy of Performing Arts, Zama Dance School in Gugulethu and the SEAP Project in Phillippi.

A presentation Performance was held at the Zama Dance School in Guguelthu on the 24th April with groups of students who were taught by these LEAP teachers during their two week Dance Intensive.

Bridging programme news

Stepping out Tour

In February,  DFA’s Bridging Programme students embarked on a Stepping Out tour for one week from the 14th -21st Feb to the small rural communities of Zolani township, Waggestroom, Montagu, Ashbury, Baden, Vleiplaas, Barrydale and Lemonshoek. A series of dance workshops and 13 performances were taken to these communities sharing the magic of dance and reaching 1155 students. How wonderful it was to see so many children and youth being inspired  by the great work of our Rural Outreach teachers, Fiona Sargeant, Afrika Mtikitiki and Pauline van Buitenen.

Contemporary Dance Programme

Students from the Contemporary dance programme have been attending four technique classes per week, taught by Louise Coetzer and Allison Hendricks, as well as an additional rehearsal class on Saturday mornings. During this time, guest choreographer Anderson Carvalho has been working with the students on a new work to be staged as part of DFA’s Kaleidoscope showcase in June.

InSPIRAtion Dance Company

Louise Coetzer’s “the Forgotten”, created for the InSPIRAtions Youth Company, was adapted for film by Darkroom Contemporary. This film has since screened at the Artscape Theatre, and has been confirmed as part of the International Selection of Agite Y Sirva, a touring dance film festival. This festival starts in Mexico later this year, before touring to various other cities.

African Contemporary Dance

It is always wonderful and exciting to start a new year knowing that we are going to meet new faces who are keen to learn dance. We have registered lots of children and it is a pleasure to see the hunger to learn in their faces.  Our focus is preparing for our show ‘Kaleidoscope’ at Artscape in June. Our young dancers are working hard in rehearsal to produce excellent work. We continue to serve the community by giving our children a skill that may help them to become a better human being.

Rural Outreach

Barrydale

The first term was used to get their technique back to where it was at the end of the year and our senior students were able to perform the battle from the motion picture The Gladiator. In February we had the Bridging Programme students and staff who came to Barrydale for the Stepping out Tour. Our Senior students were able to show their dance, The Battle from the motion picture The Gladiator.
We had once again received a big donation of ballet shoes and clothes from family and friends in the Netherlands with enough ballet shoes to give all the students at Vleiplaas primary school their own pair. We were also able to dress our senior and juniors in new outfits.
I would also like to thank St Cyprian School for their generous donation of school clothes

Montagu

My aim this term has been to inspire ‘focus discipline and passion’. In March our Rotary Club joined me in supporting 8 children to spend the day at the Cape Town City Ballet's yearly ‘Open Day’ It was such an eye opener for these young people who came back and shared their excitement with everyone.
The Montagu High School has been particularly rewarding to work with this term as I helped produce some dances for their recent school production entitled ‘Over the Rainbow’. I teach a committed group of young people who all aim to be part of the DFA Bridging Program after they matriculate. For our dancers to be of a required standard to be accepted on the Bridging program I am organizing extra classical training. It is hoped that funding will be made available for transport to allow more young people from different areas to participate in these specialized classes.
A highlight in Montagu has been the visit of Kristine Elliot. She fund raised which allowed her to choose 7 dancers to be part of a special performance that she organizes with other organizations in Cape Town.
Special thanks must always be acknowledged to our wonderful supporters here in Montagu We raised R1500 at our Montagu Easter Craft Market performances which will go towards extra’s for our Cape Town adventure and St Cyprians for they donation.
