Stepping Out Tour

DFA's Bridging Programme  students,  joined by three students from the Senior Contemporary Class,  embarked once again on an exciting tour to Barrydale and Montagu where they reached schools in the communities of Asbury, Wakkerstroom and the township of Zolani in Montagu. The students at Vleiplaas Primary & Barrydale High school, could also join in the exciting workshops, and performances.

Baxter Dance Festival

This year's Baxter Dance Festival, gave our students the opportunity to be part of an event, regarded in Cape Town as the premier dance platform of its kind and which this year showcased a record number of 78 works with about 400 dancers representing the Cape Town dance community.

Simondium Holiday Programme

The Stepping Out Tour had just finished and literally a day later, DFA took on the areas of Paarl, where we taught workshops over four days in Simondium, a great and very inspiring way for DFA's dance students in Paarl to spend the first part of their holidays.

Artscape Kunstreffers

This year's Artscape Kunstreffers took place in Worcester and DFA was once again invited to be part of a collaboration with great professionals, such as Cape Town City Ballet, Unmute Dance Company, musicians Camillo Lombard, Don Vino Prins, and also singers Alistair Izobell, Fancy Galada, Minette Pearce , and Ivan Ziegelaar. The performances, which also included those during the day to schools, left the Breede valley community and many youth totally inspired.

DCAS Solo Festival

The Department of Cultural Affairs & Sport hosted its first Solo Dance Festival this year and three of DFA's students, Kezia Dlamini, Lukhanyo Nongqongqo and Bridging Programme student Abongile Tenza, excelling in their solo performances. Surely three DFA ambassadors we can be proud of.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre

During September much excitement could be felt when world renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre visited Cape Town. DFA students were fortunate enough to attend a workshop taught by Ailey Company Dancer Rachael McClaren which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The following day the students attended an educational performance by the company at Artscape Theatre. This lecture demonstration included iconic works such as "Night Creature" and "Revelations" and was certainly an experience the students will remember for a long time to come.

Rural Outreach Programme

Barrydale hosted their annual fundraising event with an exciting theme of the Mad Hatter tea party, including all the schools in Barrydale, taught by the DFA teachers, and also an item by the DFA students from Montague.
Slightly distracted by load shedding, and with a very supportive community, and a generator brought by one of the farmers, the show could go ahead as planned.

The students and teachers also had the opportunity to see the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre perform at Artscape. This was a very big event for them, as most had never left Barrydale ever before. They were treated by their teachers with a trip to a big mall and even a first ride ever in an elevator and on an escalator, things we often take for granted. A very grateful group ofstudents, returned to Barrydale with great memories and thanks for the opportunity to be part of something they would otherwise never have had a chance to experience.

Montagu's highlights included the success of having various dance students from all the DFA teaching venues participate in the Montagu Youth Arts Festival from 12 - 22 August. The adjudicators for the festival Allison Foat and Bridgette Reeve-Taylor awarded the Zolani dance students one bronze, two silver, two gold and six double gold Awards with Lihle Mfenewinning the overall Best Dancer of the Festival. Lihle, along with Lutho Zwendala and Anele Bizwaphi  won the best 'TRIO' of the festival and Sibabalo November won the 'Most Promising  Dancer' Fiona du Plooy trophy.

The Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre  workshops and performance at Artscape gave the opportunity to the senior Zolani male students to experience their work.
Many of the youngsters had the opportunity to be part of the Montagu Makhiti Event, by the Rural Arts Foundation, a yearly carnival through the town ending in a performance at the Edward Stadium.
A contemporary dance item, choreographed by the senior male students from Zolani, also added to this year's Baxter Dance Festival, all very exciting to see them grow in their craft.
